User Reviews about Dr. Martens Unisex 5 Eye Padded Collar
I just picked up a pair of the Chinese made 8053 five eyelet with padded collar in black nappa. I was pretty worried about the quality issues mentioned in other reviews. I'm disappointed but not surprised that these are made in Asia, however, the "vintage" line made at the original factory in England is available from the Doc Martens website, at premium prices.
I used to have the three eyelet 1461s in glossy maroon and a pair in green, both from the "made in England" days about fifteen years ago. I cannot discern any difference in quality between the English pairs and the Chinese pair, but I have only been wearing them for a few hours. I am not noticing that the leather is overly stiff nor is the leather too thin. The stitching is very neatly done. These have the classic "waffle" sole that I prefer.
I suspect that there are multiple factories in the far east producing multiple styles, resulting in inconsistent quality. I hope they can resolve these issues or the brand image may continue to decline. -- Chinese 8053 in Nappa
I've owned a pair of these shoes (model 8053) for about eight years, and they are still going strong. I wear them nearly every day, from the office to the streets of Paris, and I've only just recently had to replace the insoles. I'm even still on the orginal laces. The leather looks better and better as it wears (at least the brown leather, anyway) - scratches and scuff marks only add character. Obviously, other reviewers have has issues with more recent Chinese made Docs, but the label on mine says "made in China", and they've been great. Highly recommended! -- Best shoes I've ever owned
Ok, the leather on these shoes is HARD, took several weeks to break them in to the point they didn't kill my feet. They still aren't there yet after a month. The soles too aren't what I remember of docs in the past. Instead of that walking on air feeling of my docs 10 years ago, these have the hardest soles I've ever felt. I guess that is my fault though because on the packaging there is a reference to "hard wair" which I didn't even know they made. Next pair I'm going to get will be Air wair for sure. -- Not how I remember docs!
I recently purchased a second pair of Dr. Martens unisex 5 eye padded collar. My 1st pair lasted about 5 years and were comfortable from day 1. My new pair seems to be of equal quality. I was concerned reading that Dr. Martens are now made in China and that the new tread was inferior. While the tread design is different, I checked my old shoes and they too were made in China. Apart from the new tread design (which makes no difference whatsoever) I did notice that the size 11 shoe is larger than the old size 11 and probably more of a true US size than before.
This was the best casual shoe I've ever owned and still is.
-- Still an excellent shoe
These shoes are simply perfect for daily wear at the office. They get better looking with wear and the style just screams individuality. They are incredibly comfortable and look as good with jeans as they do my khakis. I got mine in the gaucho brun color and actually wore them in my wedding. They are about a 1/4 size too small and a hair on the narrow side so do yourself a favor and get at least a half size largeer if you can (I'm a 13 and the fit is wearable in the UK14 size). Try out a pair today and if you can get them at a good price order yourself a second color while you're at it. -- Timeless quality
